Tree Pruning

The Town has established rules to protect the island's natural resources and keep them healthy for future generations.

  • The rules apply to trees and other plants, wetlands, dunes and beaches.
  • Different rules apply depending on the proposed project and its location.

It is always best to contact our Community Development Information Center at 843-341-4757 for guidance prior to starting a project.

Tree Pruning Requirements

  • To keep the tree healthy, heavy pruning — removing 20–30% of its leaves — is only allowed once every three years.
  • Removing over 30% of a tree's leaves is considered tree removal and can lead to the decline of the tree, especially if it is older or already stressed.
  • Seasonal pruning, which removes less than 20% of the tree’s leaves, is allowed once a year.
  • Topping (removing any part of the tree’s main trunk) is not allowed on healthy trees over 6 inches in diameter. Topping a tree changes the way it grows and can create hazards as it continues to develop.
  • Pruning cuts must be made in accordance with International Society of Arboriculture standard.
  • Using asphaltic tree paint to seal wounds is prohibited, as it can harm the tree rather than help it.
